Duo Cantilena welcomes Michel Deschênes at the Capitol Theatre on Thursday, May 23, 2013.

The Capitol Theatre presents the music of Duo Cantilena, with special guest Michel Deschênes on Thursday, May 23 at 7:30 pm.

Tickets are now on sale at the Capitol Theatre Box Office and range from $17 to $23 (fees included). This performance is a presentation of Ernst & Young as part of the 2012-2013 Capitol Theatre season, presented by Molson M.

Combining the talents of Sally Wright, principal flute with Symphony New Brunswick and Fredericton guitarist and recording artist Steven Peacock, Duo Cantilena invited Moncton-based percussionist Michel Deschênes to form Trio Sambucca. Together they present impressive and exciting music across a wide expressive, technical and stylistic range for flute, classical guitar, marimba, vibraphone, and a variety of drums and chimes drawn from several cultural traditions. The result is a surprisingly judicious, sometimes mysterious and always captivating instrumental combination which a wide spectrum of composers and arrangers have been unable to resist.

Ms. Wright and Mr. Peacock are well known to Canadian audiences as Duo Cantilena, whose ECMA-nominated 2010 CD release, The Green Bushes: Dances, Airs & Lullabies, features original arrangements of folk-based music in a variety of Atlantic Canadian and Spanish traditions. They both have long been exploring the many possibilities–tonal, textural, technical, stylistic and musical—inherent in the combination of the flute and the guitar. With the addition of percussionist Michel Deschênes to the mix, the colours and textures of the music, and its international range, is greatly extended. The physical and musical possibilities of their combined instruments are given even more play. The result is sometimes lyrical and mysterious, sometimes frenetic and headstrong, and always unique and powerful.
