Struts Gallery & Faucet Media Arts Centre Welcome New Open Studio Artists in Residence

larose_nagler Struts Gallery & Faucet Media Arts Centre in Sackville, NB are pleased to welcome their newest Open Studio artists in residence Alexandre Larose (Montreal) and Solomon Nagler (Halifax) from April 22 – May 24, 2013.

During their residency, the artists will rephotograph images from their respective families’ 8mm film archives, synthesizing the footage together to create a lush, emotional memory-scape. Searching for their cinematic DNA, they will rework innovative amateur accidents and amplify the degraded history inscribed on the faded celluloid dreams of their namesakes.

The original material, shot on colour Kodachrome 8mm film, is a reversal film stock with poetic pigments that no longer exist. These beloved film works left us no means of duplication, a rarity among works produced by mechanical means; a fragile, elusive original that is in a constant state of decay.

The artists will rephotograph selections from this archive onto Ektachrome 16mm reversal film, a recently discontinued stock that mirrors the colour saturated fragility of the original material. The artists have purchased all of the remaining film stock in Canada, an elegiac gesture that re-imagines an archive by resetting the state of decay. They will spend the first part of their residency reassembling and testing out Faucet Media Arts Centre’s optical printer, and will host weekly screenings of experimental 16mm and Super8mm films.
