Congratulations to Monica Lacey on winning the 2012 Nel Oudemans Award for excellence in fine art and craft from the Sheila Hugh Mackay Foundation! An independent jury selected Monica to receive the $2000 award. The Sheila Hugh Mackay Foundation promotes excellence in the visual arts of New Brunswick.
About the Award
The annual Nel Oudemans Award acknowledges the extraordinary contribution of Fredericton weaver Nel Oudemans to Canada’s applied arts field, as well as to fine arts and craft education in New Brunswick.
To mark her association since 1947 with the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design (NBCCD), the Award recognizes the pursuit of excellence in the fields of fine craft, design, and the visual arts by the college’s recent graduates. Recipients must have graduated from NBCCD within the past five years and continued to develop skills in their field either by way of continued study or professional practice in New Brunswick or elsewhere.
Monica Lacey
Currently working in Charlottetown, PEI, Monica is a recent graduate of NBCCD whose broad range of creative practice and active involvement with the arts community won high praise from the jury. Peter Laroque, Elizabeth Harrison and Kate Wallace, in reviewing Monica’s recent portfolio, noted both the evocative nature of her work and the use of striking imagery to explore universal themes. She will travel to New Brunswick to receive the award as part of the 25th anniversary celebrations of the Sheila Hugh Mackay Foundation.
