The Capitol Theatre in Moncton has unveiled the programming for its upcoming season! The 2012-2013 performing arts season will offer more than 24 performances, running from September through May. The Capitol Theatre is proud to associate itself with Molson M as its season partner.
New show times!

2012-2013 Programming
The season will take off in September with children’s musical entertainment group Scotty and the Stars at the Empress Theatre (September 29). Scott “Scotty” Sampson, Andy Cotter and Kelly Waterhouse provide a musical and theatrical experience where children march, stomp, clap and dance their way through this interactive and fun-filled journey.
In October, the Atlantic Ballet Theatre of Canada will present a classic from its repertoire, Amadeus (October 5). Conceived and choreographed by Artistic Director Igor Dobrovolskiy, the ballet interweaves the music of Mozart and Salieri with a spellbinding plot and larger-than-life characters.
Canadian singer songwriter and multidisciplinary artist Bif Naked (October 19) will perform fan favorites such as Spaceman and Lucky as well new songs that will be featured on her first acoustic album to be released soon.
Quebec stand-up comic Peter MacLeod (October 20) is back on the Capitol stage to present his fourth one man show “Sagesse Reportée”. He talks about being in his 40s and what it means or at least, what it should mean for him. This stand-up comedian has sold over 700 000 show tickets in his entire career, proving that he is still one of the best stand-up comedian Quebec has to offer.
The spectacular theatrical circus, Les Chroniques du Laboratoire UNIK by LaboKracBoom (October 24) is inspired by the energy of street performances and the aesthetics of cartoons. This all-ages show incorporates juggling, acrobatics, dance, clowns and brings us into the murky world of an underground laboratory and its four creepy characters.
In the horror theme, Hubcity Theatre performs the hair-raising, blood-curdling, skin-crawling vampire play: Dracula (October 31, November 1-3). Opening on All Hallow’s Eve, it is to be an evening rich in horror, described by critics as a play for people that like their coffee strong. Prepare to be quaked delightedly, shocked supernaturally, and thrilled satisfactorily!
In November, the company L’Aubergine will present its family production Burletta (November 5). Created by artists from Quebec and Brazil, Burletta is a restless urban clown’s family. Like in every big family, all individuals compete with derision and perseverance to take their place. How do they compete? With juggling, balancing acts, diabolo, gymnastics, acrobatics, dance, Chinese plates and music, of course!
This year, the Jeunesses Musicales du Canada will enchant the public with Mozart and his famous Italian comic opera Così fan tutte (November 20). This joyful late 18th century opera tells a tale of jealousy, trickery, and mischief. A light and cheeky Mozartian delight, performed by the country’s finest emerging artists!
Two East Coast artists, Dave Gunning and Emilie Rae (November 22) will take the stage in a double-bill evening. Nova Scotia’s Dave Gunning is a multiple award-winning recording artist and internationally-acclaimed singer songwriter who has ten critically acclaimed albums to his credit. This opening act, Emilie Rae, is an up and coming Moncton artist who just released her first EP, Frigid Fire. This young woman has fantastic vocals and stage presence that is sure to win the hearts of many!
From his start in his high school band, Thrush Hermit, through his solo work and records with The Emergency, to his current project, Scrappy Happiness, Joel Plaskett (December 1) has always found a way to expand his musical horizons and to challenge himself and his audiences. Moncton is one of many stops in an extensive Canadian tour.
The Holiday season will begin officially at the Capitol Theatre with The Nutcracker performed by Moncton’s Academy of Classical Ballet & Modern Dances (December 7, 8 & 9). This Christmas classic is filled with holiday magic that easily captivates and entertains the audience. And as always, it wouldn’t be the Holiday season at the Capitol Theatre without the Christmas show Noël with Les Muses, Bélivo Brothers and Roland Gauvin (December 13 to 16).
Theatre New Brunswick is presenting It’s A Wonderful Life (December 17) as directed by Caleb Marshall. This new take on an old favourite reimagines the holiday classic as a 1940s radio drama, complete with live sound effects, radio jingles and 9 actors playing 63 characters. For the younger crowd, DuffleBag Theatre Company is back this year with Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer (December 27), a fun-filled humorous show where audience members are spontaneously invited to participate like you’ve never seen before!
The Université de Moncton Opera workshop presents the classic Cinderella (January 26 and 27). The opera by Jules Massenet with a libretto by Henri Cain and Paul Collin is based on the tale by Charles Perrault. This fairy tale as a light opera will be presented with a choir, and orchestra and soloists. (in French with English surtitles).
On February 15, young and up-and-coming singer songwriters Caroline Savoie, the Hay Babies, and the finalists of the provincial singing contest Accros de la chanson will take the Empress Theatre by storm. Caroline Savoie has tremendous charm and a melodious voice (she recently won the 2012 Accros de la chanson). The Hay Babies are a trio from NB who are rapidly conquering fans all over the province. The Accros the la chanson contest features some of the best francophone young talent in NB.
The Sursaut dance company presents BOO! an evening for the whole family aimed at kids 4 to 12 (February 21). Boo! encourages kids to discover dance through various topics which make them laugh and think! Manitoba singer songwriter JP Hoe (February 27) gets people talking. His style has been described as jazzy and poppy and he has been compared to Bob Dylan … if Dylan wrote more love songs. Hoe will release, this summer, his fifth album, Mannequin, which he describes as “tight, focused, and confident”.
Eccentric Canadian songwriter/filmmaker Bob Wiseman presents his one-of-a-kind, one-man show, Actionable (March 14) in which he recounts his struggles within the music industry after quitting the Canadian folk rock institution Blue Rodeo and trying to establish a solo career. The show features Wiseman’s trademark quirky songs on accordion, guitar and keyboard, as well as his stories using Super 8 film, video projection, and PowerPoint.
Considered to be China’s most celebrated acrobatic company, the performers of the The New Shanghai Circus have stunned audiences all over the world. They will be in Moncton (March 16) with a fast-paced production that brings the Orient to Canada! Featuring spectacular backdrops, beautiful costuming, and state-of-the-art lighting, this show is a thrill a minute!
Singer songwriter from Quebec Bernard Adamus will hit the Capitol Theatre stage on March 21. Adamus mixes folk, blues, country and even hip hop. His songs are at times raw and humoristic, but most of all entertaining and lively.
Vent du Nord will brings its breeze to the Capitol Theatre on April 10. The band is constantly on the road – Canada, USA, Europe – and every performance is a hit. The band whose repertoire is composed of traditional Quebec music and original tunes is sure to make the crowd dance, a great evening for all!
Acadian sweetheart Monique Poirier (April 18) launched a first solo album last January, Parler de paradis, and she has many stories to tell her fans. With beautiful melodies and a soft yet sometimes powerful voice, Monique knows how to captivate her public.
The Duo Cantilena performs captivating performance of music for flute and classical guitar across a wide stylistic and expressive range, with a Spanish flair and some Atlantic Canada folk melodies (May 23). Symphony New Brunswick’s principal flute Sally Wright and Fredericton guitarist Steven Peacock take the stage with special guest, percussionist, Michel Deschênes.
