Two years ago Mississippi Heat really lit up the Roadhouse. This is because Mississippi Heat is one of the hardest working bands in Chicago with one mantra: play the traditional down-home Chicago sound with lots of energy and an original twist. That formula has been working for them now for almost 20 years in every part of the world: they’ve headlined the Chicago and Montreal Blues Festivals, are in great demand in Europe, and regularly work the best clubs in Chicago and everywhere else they go. The band leader, Pierre Lacocque (who has Canadian connection–he studied at McGill) has had much success at being the centre of an evolving lineup that has kept the sound fresh and interesting, and that has included guitarists Billy Flynn, James Wheeler and Carl Weathersby, vocalists Deitra Farr, Zora Young and Inneta Visor, and drummer/vocalist Robert Covington. The current lineup includes the fine vocalist Inneta Visor, Daniel Draher (ex-Etta James) on guitar, long-time member Victor Jackson on bass, Kevin Johnson on drums with Pierre on harmonica.
Please note that the slightly delayed start time of 9.30 PM, to accommodate our patrons who are interested in seeing the highly recommended Performing Arts Series presentation of the Ingrid Jensen band at 8 PM.
“An energetic and cohesive ensemble. One of Chicago’s top bands.”
– CHICAGO TRIBUNE
“Quite simply the hottest band in Chicago…”
– CHICAGO SUN-TIMES
“One of the most exciting blues ensemble performing today. . . MISSISSIPPI HEAT is one of those bands that defies cliches because each CD is better than the last. . . Pierre Lacocque’s harmonica technique and musical imagination is superlative. He plays with the finesse and golden tone. Horn players could take lessons from him from the lines he uses.”
– PHIL LLOYD (AMERICAN HARMONICA NEWSLETTER)
“Pierre is a virtuoso.”
– BILLY BOY ARNOLD
“MISSISSIPPI HEAT not only breathes new life into the classic sounds of Chicago Blues but they also uplift with joy and dedication everything they play. Pierre Lacocque is that rare younger generation harpists who’s absorbed the lessons of subtlety, silence, and solo construction from the masters – Big and Little Walter, the Sonny Boy Williamsons – as well as their raucous, hawklike tonal power.”
– DAVID WHITEIS, (CHICAGO READER)
“All of MISSISSIPPI HEAT’s CD’s are pearls. This is one of my favorite blues band. . . I have rarely heard more passionate and soulful blues.”
– CLAUDE COTE (LE DEVOIR, MONTREAL,CANADA)
“It’s been a long time since I heard a good blues band like this. You guys really play great music together.”
– BUDDY GUY
“MISSISSIPPI HEAT has developed its own unmistakable sound. They have a signature, an immediately recognizable feel. . . Their CDs are a musical achievement.”
– RENE MOISAN (PRESIDENT, PRODUCTION BROS., MONTREAL, CANADA)
“This hard-driving Chicago blues band plays classic Chicago blues with flair, intelligence and respect for the traditions established by musical predecessors Muddy Waters and Howlin’ Wolf. . . MISSISSIPPI HEAT provides living proof that harp dominated Chicago style bands is not an anachronism.”
