The Upper Miramichi Regional High School in Boiestown will be closing its doors at the end of June 2010. The Doaktown Primary School will also be shutting down in late fall/early winter. As of September 2010, Doaktown Consolidated High will be removing its Grades 6-12 students so they can join as one with those from UMRHS to form the new Central New Brunswick Academy.
A joint-committee of residents from the Rural Community of Upper Miramichi and from the Village of Doaktown is planning a gala reunion to honor our former schools and to celebrate a new beginning. The “Two Schools One Spirit” event scheduled for August 27 – August 29, 2010 will feature a Meet & Greet, tours of the schools (new and old), an ecumenical church service and songfest, “The Last Dance” prom, and much, much more.

Neon Highway
It’s cold enough to snow, so why not start planning where you’re going to ring in the new decade?
East Coast recording artist, Rik Reese & Neon Highway are returning to Miramichi to help ring in the New Year at Cowboy’s Club. The country rockers were in Miramichi last June on the line-up with Blue Rodeo at the Miramichi Culture Fest and are looking forward to the always responsive, participative crowds in “the Chi”.
“The people of Miramichi once told us, ‘we like to giver on the River,’”, said Reese. Since then, Reese and his band have inserted that now sing-along Miramichi slogan, “Giver on the River”, into a medley of CCR numbers they are sure to include this coming New Year’s Eve! Read more »

Homecoming monument August 16, 2009 L to R: Juanita Long, Doris Stewart, Phoebe Clowater, Perley Clowater, Mabel O'Donnell, John Stewart, Lena O'Donnell
by Viola Savage
In February 2008, several members of the Facebook group “McNamee on the Mighty Miramichi” began discussions regarding a McNamee reunion – perhaps an afternoon picnic at the Footbridge. Support for this idea provided the momentum that brought us to August 14, 15, & 16, 2009 – a three day event packed with fun and activities, certainly a long way from the initial afternoon picnic idea. An August 19, 2008 public meeting at the McNamee Recreation Center for all those interested in organizing a homecoming event led to the formation of an ad hoc planning committee. And, to coin that old expression, “the rest is history.”
During the weekend of August 14, 15 & 16, 2009, more than 600 people descended upon McNamee, NB and surrounding communities (Priceville, Porter Cove, Ludlow, New Bandon, Carroll’s Crossing and the villages of Doaktown and Boiestown) to attend this “first ever” homecoming event. Attendance numbers alone speak for the success of Come Home to the River – McNamee 2009. People who attended the homecoming came from not only the Miramichi area and NB but also travelled from all parts of Canada, the United States, Europe, Brazil and Peru. Read more »

The Harvest Jazz and Blues Festival announced the five finalists who will compete to be the 2009 CBC Galaxie Rising Star. Presented by the Festival and Galaxie, CBC’s continuous music network, the Rising Star Showcase is one of the region’s most important and highly competitive musical competitions and a potentially career-launching opportunity for developing New Brunswick performers, offering regional and national exposure for the top five finalists.
This year’s finalists are Fredericton’s Sleepy Driver, Weak Size Fish and Becca DeHaan & the Love Me Three Times Band, Babette Hayward from Quispamsis, and Jens Jeppesen from New Denmark.
This year, the Galaxie Rising Star Showcase will return to the Festival line-up. On Friday, September 18th at 2pm the finalists will take the stage at Dolan’s Pub, where they will be judged on their talent, originality and stage presence by a panel of music industry experts, as well as through audience and online voting through the CBC website.

Matt Minglewood & Rik Reese
ECMA recording artist, Rik Reese, and his band Neon Highway, have done it again!
In a few short months after releasing his album titled, Mama Raised a Good Boy, Reese and his band have opened for The Kentucky Headhunters, Julian Austin, Blue Rodeo, George Canyon, The Divorcees, 1755, and most recently Matt Minglewood.
“This debut album by Rik Reese should quickly put the Moncton, New Brunswick-based singer/ songwriter in the national spotlight. The album is jam-packed with top notch tunes all written by Reese,” says Larry Delaney of Country Music News.
“Having heard many Canadian artists before, Rik Reese has to be one of the best emerging from our Commonwealth neighbour,” says Russell Hill of Maverick Magazine in the UK.
“Considering Matt Minglewood was my first live concert that I saw as a youngster, it’s a great honour to now open for the legendary Maritime artist,” Reese said.
The memorable show took place on Aug 8-2009 in Saint John, NB as part of the Fundy Bay Festival.

Daddy’s little girls, Jules and Abby, enjoy time with their father, Jason Keenan.
A benefit night will happen this Saturday April 4 from 7pm-1am at Nine Pine Truck Stop on Main Street in Blackville. All proceeds will go toward the first annual Miramichi Walk for a Cure to Diabetes. Music will be provided by M.O.T.E.L, a new local band featuring Jake Stewart, Justin Walls, Rudy Miller and Jonathan Walls. Door prizes will be drawn throughout the night.
“Local businesses have been very supportive of this fundraiser,” says Jennifer Keenan, Chair of the Miramichi Walk Committee. “We’ve got some awesome door prizes to give away, something for everyone, including various merchandise and gift certificates ranging in value from $20 up to $100. There are going to be a lot of lucky winners.”
