Music NB Week Helps Musicians, Artists & Agents Navigate Industry

Music NB week is the perfect opportunity for artists, musicians and agents to get the knowledge and information they need to navigate the music industry. Music NB week will take place from October 11 to 14, 2012, in Moncton.

During the four day event, Music NB Week goers will have the opportunity to take in various conferences and panels with music industry players such John Mullane of In-Flight Safety, Red Tentacle: A Music Solutions Company, and Robert Léger, formerly of Beau Dommage. Various subjects will be on the table such as demo discussion, song writing, getting gigs and reaching out to fans, online promotion, YouTube, playing on the international stage, putting fun in funding, and so much more.

Most conferences, workshops, panels, etc. will be held on Saturday and Sunday and take place at the Crowne Plaza in Moncton (1005, Main Street). Music NB delegate passes are on sale for $75 (plus service fees) and give access to all conferences and panels as well as reception and network events and evening showcases. “NO ONE OWES YOU SHIT: and other inspiring truths about the music industry”
Musicians and artists don’t want to miss this conference, presented by Hassan King and Josh Hogan of Red Tentacle: A Music Solutions Company, located in Nova Scotia. The intensive one hour presentation will cover the current state of the music business. Topics of discussion will include: What is Holding You Back, Things You Should be Doing, Getting Gigs and Reaching Fans, Need to Know Tips, etc. For more information visit: www.redtentacle.ca. Demo Dissection with John Mullane
A work session lead by Moncton native John Mullane of In-Flight Safety will give participants a chance to have their songs or demos listened to, dissected and discussed. Music NB promises that no feelings will be hurt! The session will take place on Sunday, October 14 at 9:30 AM. All participants must register at musicnb.org before Friday October 12.

With countless hours of driving across Canada behind them, John Mullane and his bandmates find themselves in the middle of a musical narrative they started on years ago. They have numerous awards under their belts including a JUNO nomination for their last album.

More workshop and panels and other industry opportunities
On Friday, October 12 at 4 PM, Music/Musique NB and the Canada Council for the Arts are pleased to present an Info Session about the programs available. A Q&A session as well as a reception will follow the presentation.

“Road Stories and Paths Taken” will feature some of New Brunswick’s most established artists: Julie Doiron, John Mullane giving insight and anecdotal tales. The panel will be moderated by Bob Mersereau (CBC host and Music scene guru) and take place at 10 am on Saturday, October 13, at the Crowne Plaza.

“Performing abroad: Things you need to know” with Greg Marks, Canadian Federation of Musicians (Local 815, NB) will cover such issues as traveling with gear & merch, professional insurance, work visas, and more on Saturday, October 13, 11 am, at the Crowne Plaza.

“Do you Youtube??” is a panel discussion with artists Jon Jerome (The McDons House), and a member of the band The Cauldron Project, and moderated by Don Levandier. Some of New Brunswick’s prominent music community Youtubers will discuss what’s worked for them, what hasn’t worked – and what they’d like to be doing next on the popular video website. The panel will take place at 1:30 PM on Saturday, October 13, at the Crowne Plaza.

Tapped out with twitter? Busted by Bandcamp? Holding out on Hootsuite? Lynn Daigle of Malkin Music/Cyber PR and Kate Doyle of MNB will cover the basics of these services and more, so you don’t have to, on Saturday, October 13, at 3 pm during the conference “1…2….FREE: Getting yourself online for free in 7 days”, at the Crowne Plaza. Get an insider’s look at all the internet freebies to get your band moving, shaking and sharing.

Managers Corner with Jeff Liberty (Matt Andersen, Babett Hayward, Mike Biggar), Yolande Bourgeois (Dominique Dupuis, Roland Gauvin, Fayo), Peter Rowan (Julie Doiron), and moderated by Bob Mersereau, will ask the question: what is the role of the manager in today’s industry. What do artists expect from mangers and agents? What are the misconceptions and expectations from both sides? An event to be missed on Saturday, October 13, at 4 pm, at the Crowne Plaza. This panel discussion will take place in both languages.

The One-on-One Business Meetings to take place on Sunday, October 14 at noon is a great chance for the artists to talk directly to the delegates to exchange professional information or to pitch his or her show. Participants must register by October 10th via musicnb.org.

A FACTOR Info Session will take place at 1:30 pm on Sunday October 14 at the Crowne Plaza. The info session on the programs and the jury system will be presented by Lori Guillemet, Submissions Coordinator at FACTOR.

How to “Put the fun in funding”?
Who would think that fun and funding could go together? Darren Gallop of Marcato Digital asks: “Why depend on grants to produce albums and finance touring?” Artists are invited to learn about alternative funding sources for their projects on Sunday, October 14, 2:30 pm, at the Crowne Plaza.

All artists have them from time to time: “Application Blues” are common in the business. This panel will feature insight on the process from the evaluators’ perspective as well common mistakes people make when applying to showcases and grants. Jamie Steel (Artist Manager, Sunbury Shores), Don Levandier (the Motorleague, Founder of Moncton Locals), Lorie Guillemet (FACTOR), Lynn Daigle (Malkin Music/Cyber PR, MuchFact Board member), will be on hand, during the panel moderated by Darren Gallop (Marcato Festival) on Saturday, October 14, 3:30 pm, at the Crowne Plaza.

A few conferences/workshops will take place in French only. Quebec signer songwriter, formerly of famed Quebec 70’s music act Beau Dommage, Robert Léger, will offer a song writing workshop on Sunday, October 14, at 9:30 am, in the Crowne Plaza Boardroom. Participants must register before October 10 at musicnb.org.

A presentation aimed to help artists make the leap on the international stage will be offered on Thursday, October 11, at Aberdeen Cultural Centre at 1 pm (in French only). A pre-registration is required (506-383-4662) and artists are asked to bring their promo material and merch.
