Setting Health Goals
by Dr. Jason Plotsky

It is vital for us to set health goals. In today’s stressed times it
is more and more important to take time out of our busy schedules for ourselves. In our health talks that we do in our office
(check our website for details) we often talk about the health continuum. In our lives we have choices everyday that push
us toward health or push us toward sickness. Our habits and choices determine which direction we move toward. So what direction
are you moving in? If you change nothing about your current habits or lifestyle, what will your health look like in 5 years?
What about in 10-15 years? It comes down to this: the choices you make today will affect your health in the future.
So how do you set health goals? What do you want your future health to look
like? Are your habits and behaviors consistent with that? If they are, great. If they are not, there is an incongruency and
change needs to occur. So start with the big picture and make some categories for yourself (exercise, diet, etc.). Then you
need to get specific. Goals are similar to a map: the more clear and concise they are, the faster you will get to your destination.
Our bodies were designed to move. How much are you moving yours? How many times
would you like to exercise per week? What types of things are well suited for you? You may need to do some research. What
times and locations are the classes and events occurring? Then these events need to be SCHEDULED into your day timer. Remember
this: if you do not have time for illness, you better make time for wellness.

How are your eating habits? Again, is there consistency between what you want
your future health to look like and what you are feeding the machine? Do you drink enough water? Do you eat frequent and small
meals? Is your diet loaded with fresh fruits and vegetables? Are you taking care of any food intolerances or sensitivities?
Have you visited your Naturopathic Doctor for the latest recommendations and supplements? Are you at your ideal weight? What
steps are you taking to get there?
Is your life balanced? How are you managing stress? Are you taking care of
issues or letting them build until they bust? What or who are you tolerating in your life? Make a list of five things you
are tolerating and set a date to have them resolved. Tolerations are often an energy drainer. Make a point to resolve these
issues. How are your communication skills? Isn’t it interesting that we have TWO ears and ONE mouth.
What aches and pains are
you putting up with? I always find it remarkable how long people will put up with problems in their bodies. Remember pain
is a warning signal not to be ignored. Are you masking pain or getting to the root cause of the problem? Are you aware that
MILLIONS of people in North
America choose chiropractic care for their health concerns? Try something new, for something old.
So what do you want your
future health to look like? Write it down in detail and paint a very clear picture. When are you going to accomplish this?
What steps do you have to take to achieve your goal? What is the benefit to reaching this goal? The mind is target oriented;
once you have your goals written, have them in a place to review weekly. This will keep you on pace. Do these things and watch
your health improve over the next year!
