Cyberbullying Summit in Miramichi
Parents and the general public are invited to attend a free session on cyberbullying at the James M. Hill Theatre in Miramichi on Wednesday May 4th beginning at 7 p.m.
The Child Safety Research & Innovation Centre (CSRIC) has partnered with the Miramichi Police Force and New Brunswick School District 16 to address serious issues for children and youth including cyberbullying.
Cyberbullying is a rising problem. While most online interactions are positive, some kids use the Internet as a means of antagonising, threatening and intimidating others. Unlike regular schoolyard bullying, cyberbullying is more anonymous making it harder to track. Young people are more apt to say things online that they would never say in a face-to-face situation.
CSRIC is co-ordinating a one-day summit with multiple sessions to target each of the key audiences: law enforcement personnel, educators, children, youth and parents. Keynote speaker Parry Aftab will head these sessions.

Parry Aftab is a security, privacy and cyberspace lawyer, as well as an author and child advocate. When children and the Internet are concerned, Aftab’s name is the first mentioned. She is a world-wide leader in online safety and parent and child Internet education. As Executive Director of WiredSafety.org, the largest online safety and educational program in cyberspace, Parry helps prevent and investigate cybercrime. She also works closely with law enforcement around the world to police the Internet and is part of the Home Office CybercrimeTask Force in the UK.
Parry will provide 3 sessions: one for students, one for law enforcement personnel and educators, and one for parents. There is no charge for the session on Wednesday evening and all parents and the general public are encouraged to attend. A question and answer period will follow Parry’s presentation. Tea and coffee will be served.
