Meet the Miramichi Candidates

When Miramichiers head to the polls on Monday, June 28^th, they will have four candidates to choose from.

Liberal candidate, Charles Hubbard, is the current MP for Miramichi riding. Michael Morrison of the Conservative Party, Hilaire Rouselle of the New Democratic Party and Garry Sanipass of the Green Party are challenging him.

Here is a little about each candidate as found on their websites.

Charles Hubbard was first elected to the House of Commons in the general election of October 1993 for the federal constituency of Miramichi.

Since his election, he has served on several standing committees, and was Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development.

He served as Chair of the Atlantic Caucus for two years and, during that time, devoted his energy towards a renewal of the Liberal Party in Atlantic Canada.

He is a lifelong member of several Liberal associations and has served as campaign manager for local candidates in four provincial elections. Since his years at university, he has attended most provincial and national conventions.

In 1961, he graduated from the Royal Canadian School of Infantry. He served briefly with Canadian Guards in Germany and later as a platoon officer, quartermaster, adjutant, company commander and Deputy commander of 2 Royal New Brunswick Regiment (NS).

In 1963 he began his lengthy career at Harkins High School in Newcastle. He was also a member of the New Brunswick Teachers Association, the Principals Council, and the National Association of Secondary School Principals.

Active in his church and community, he has been deeply involved in many community organisations.

Mr. Hubbard has a Bachelor of Arts degree majoring in History and Economics, and continued with a Master of Arts in History and a Bachelor of Education degree.

Mr. Hubbard lives with his wife Patricia on the family farm in Red Bank.

Michael John Morrison was born on February 11, 1946 and raised in the Miramichi. Upon marrying his wife Janice, the two moved to the community of Derby just outside the city of Miramichi. He still lives there today and has raised three children, Robbie, Michael Shawn, and Angelia.

"Mike", as his friends know him, made his name known in the community through his achievements in football, curling, baseball, and hockey. Later in life, he became a respected member of the community through his accomplishments in his career in the local pulp and paper industry.

Mike attended Harkins High School and worked with the local grocery store during his youth. He worked as a labourer sorting lumber at Anderson’s lumber mill during his summers as a student. Following graduation from High School in 1966, he went to work in various departments at the mill under Fraser Companies. In 1973, he took a leave from work and attended trade school in Fredericton studying steam fitting and pipe fitting while married with a son.

When he returned in 1974, he worked under O&M until 1980 when he was offered the position as maintenance co-ordinator with Boisie Cascade. When the mill became Repap Enterprises, he became supervisor for maintenance to organise and work with the construction crew on the multi-million dollar expansion and building of the "A1" paper machine. He organised training, headed crew selections, and overlooked the start up of equipment. He then prepared the team to take over in July of 1986.

He was promoted in 1987 to maintenance superintendent and was to oversee the operation of the paper machine. In 1988, he was asked to head the phase two implementation of the duplicate "A2" paper machine. He juggled the obligations of the "A1" operations and simultaneously worked on the expansion and building of the "A2" paper machine.

In December of 1989 the second phase paper machine started up successfully. He worked in his position as maintenance superintendent for a 13-year time span until January of 2003 when he officially retired. During his career he faced many challenges in being a team leader, project co-ordinator and organising operations.

Over the years, Mike has met and earned the respect of many in the community through his involvement in local activities. He coached Minor Hockey for 21 years and even won some Provincial Championships. During his time of coaching, he also played as a goaltender. In 1983, he was one of six directors on the Miramichi to organise the AAA hockey program. In 1985, he coached the AAA team in Caraquet, NB for one year. After twenty years and many championship titles, the program still exists today and remains successful. He was also a member of the Minor Baseball Association to help build the present day program.

Mike’s interest in politics has accelerated in the last few years and since his retirement from UPM-Kymmene Inc. He has been a member of various boards, the latest being the Planning and Appeal Board of the Province of New Brunswick. He served as a campaign member for the Southwest Miramichi provincial party for 2003. Under his direction as Poll Captain, his poll received the highest results for the conservatives out of the last three provincial elections. He also is a member of the board for the Southwest Miramichi Riding and currently holds the position of the boards Secretary.
