Walking Challenge Ends

The Second Annual Miramichi Walking Challenge ended November 27th and participants are reminded to send in their walking record by December 10th in order to be eligible for prizes.

Walking records can be turned in to the Miramichi Regional Hospital (Attention: MANGO), Yvon’s Health and Fitness Centres, Miramichi Subway and Irving Mainway stores, or to Walking Central located in the Lindon Recreation Centre. They can also be faxed to the Miramichi Regional Hospital at 623-3502 or e-mailed to mango@health.nb.ca.

The eight-week challenge began on October 3rd and encouraged Miramichi area residents to become active and eat at least five to 10 servings of fruits and vegetables per day.

“Those who have been participating from the beginning and have been active for 30 minutes most days of the week and eating their required servings of fruits and vegetables are well on their way to developing a healthy habit and leading a more permanent healthier lifestyle,” says Lucy McCray, a Miramichi Regional Health Authority dietitian.

She says studies have shown that people who are at the healthiest weights and have the lowest risk of developing heart disease, cancer, diabetes and high blood pressure are those who eat at least 5-10 servings of fruits and vegetables per day and exercise on a regular basis.

Over 500 individuals and groups registered to participate in the Walking Challenge.

“Our goal is for those individuals to remain active and eat the required amount of fruits and vegetables.”

She says these important lifestyle changes are very positive and can help get you through the hectic Christmas season where high fat and sugar goodies are readily available and busy schedules often put exercise routines aside.

“If you are able to maintain your present activity or close to it — remember a little is better than none at all — and keep lots of fresh fruits and vegetables on hand, you’ll be able to survive the Christmas holidays and be ready to make your next positive lifestyle change in the new year instead of feeling like you have to start over again.”

If the idea of walking outside in the snow and cold makes you want to give up, the Lindon Recreation Centre’s Walking Central and the Golden Hawk gym are open for walking during the winter months (call 623-2300 for times).
