Summary of October 25, 2004 Board Meeting
The Miramichi Regional Health Authority Board of Directors held its regular
monthly meeting, October 25th, at the Miramichi Regional Hospital. The following are highlights of that meeting:
1. Health Authority to launch community wellness newsletter
On November 5, the Miramichi Regional Health Authority will launch its
first bilingual Community Wellness Newsletter in partnership with the Miramichi Leader/Weekend newspaper. The newsletter will
contain articles that address health issues in the Miramichi region. Topics to be addressed in the first newsletter include
the benefits of breastfeeding, diabetes prevention, the promotion of walking and physical activity, and the importance of
preventative medicine. The newsletter will be published on a quarterly basis and be distributed to Miramichi residents through
the Miramichi Leader and weekend household advertisement packages.
2. Recruitment
The Health Authority is currently participating with the province of New
Brunswick in visiting various Maritime, Quebec and Ontario universities to recruit health professionals. Recruitment is ongoing
for pharmacists, speech language pathologists, and an audiologist. Dr. Carl Hudson, VP Medical Affairs was pleased to report
that an internist and general family practitioner were showing interest in locating to the region. He hopes to receive confirmation
from these physicians within the next few weeks.
3. Permanent Pacemaker program ready to be implemented
The Health Authority will be ready to implement its permanent pacemaker
program in November. The required training has been completed for nursing and medical professionals. This program will be
positive for eligible patients, as they will now be able to remain in their own community to receive this intervention.
4. Over 500 residents have registered for the Miramichi Walking
Challenge
The second annual Miramichi Walking Challenge was launched on Sunday, October
3rd. Approximately 550 persons registered to participate in the 8-week walking challenge. Participants who registered by October
14 were eligible to win the grand prize of a trip for two to the Rodd Resort Hotel in Charlottetown, PEI.
