November Regional Health
Authority Board Meeting
The Miramichi Regional Health Authority Board of Directors held its monthly
regular meeting November 29, 2004, at the Miramichi Regional Hospital. The following are highlights of that meeting:
1.
Recruitment
It was reported that the Health Authority had successfully recruited an internist to work at the
Miramichi Regional Hospital. Dr. Zbigniew Nowak is expected to begin work with the health authority in December. Doctors'
Syed and Najneen Ahmed, a husband and wife emergency room physician team, are also expected to begin work with the health
authority early in the New Year. The pair were recruited from South Africa. Recruitment is ongoing for an anaesthetist, family
physicians and pharmacists.
It was also noted that the health authority had been granted funding for a second orthopaedic
surgeon to provide collaborative orthopaedic services to the northern part of the province and the Miramichi region. The surgeon’s
billing number will be based out of the Miramichi Regional Health Authority. Discussions are currently taking place with the
Restigouche Health Authority and the Acadie Bathurst Health Authority to develop a collaborative services model to provide
this service.

2. Region’s Healthy Workplace proposal
chosen by province to send to Health Canada for funding
In his report to the Board, Gary Foley, Acting President
and CEO was pleased to announce the Miramichi Regional Health Authority’s Healthy Workplace proposal had been chosen
by the government of New Brunswick to be submitted to Health Canada for funding. The proposal was chosen based on criteria
established by Health Canada and the province that included having the most potential for future provincial implementation,
allowing for close collaboration between RHAs, and that it was aligned with the Provincial Health and Business Plan. The Board
congratulated the employees involved in developing this proposal for their outstanding initiative.
3.
Acting Vice President of Professional Services to be posted
The Acting Vice President of Professional Services
position becomes vacant in December. The position will be posted internally and if no suitable candidates, will be posted
externally. The current Vice President of Professional Services, Gloria Merrithew has accepted a full-time position as the
Deputy Chief Coroner with the Province of New Brunswick. The Board thanked Merrithew for her contribution to the organisation
and wished her well in her new position.
In other personnel matters, Patrick Finnigan, Board Chairperson reported that
he was in discussion with the Department of Health and Wellness to proceed with the hiring of a permanent President and CEO
for the health authority. The Deputy Minister of Health and Wellness will co-ordinate this process.
4.
Equipment donated
The health authority was recently informed that a Miramichi Regional Hospital Foundation donor
will be donating funds to purchase four holter monitors and four blood pressure monitors at a cost of $28,000.
5.
Board ends six-month period with a surplus
It was reported that at the end of September, the health authority had
an operating surplus of $62,957 as a result of the Miramichi Regional Hospital keeping their admission rate down during that
period in preparation for possible strike action.
