Hospital Expands Day
Surgery Program
The Miramichi Regional Health Authority will expand its day surgery program to include
more procedures for outpatient surgery patients.
“The expanded day surgery program will be positive for patients
as it is less disruptive to their regular routine, and it allows them to recuperate in their own home,” said Dr. Ronald
Harebottle, chief of surgery for the Miramichi Regional Health Authority.
“Modern technological advances and
medical techniques have changed the way many illnesses and injuries are diagnosed and treated.”
He says specialised
scopes, microsurgical instruments, and radiologic equipment make it possible for many diagnostic and surgical procedures to
be performed on an outpatient or same day basis.
Recently, the surgical procedures of laparoscopic cholecystectomys
or gall bladder removal, tonsillectomies, adenoidectomies, and some hernia repairs have been included in the day surgery program.
Future surgical procedures will include mastectomies, and some orthopaedic and urology procedures.
“Feedback
from patients has been very positive as it allows them to be in and out of the hospital in the same day,” said Corina
Balcom, nurse manager of the operating room.

She says a patient is assessed prior to their surgery to determine if they
are a candidate for day surgery by a pre-operative team that includes the patient’s physician and nursing staff.
“If
patients have no underlying medical conditions and meet certain criteria, they would be considered a candidate.”
All
day surgery patients are required to visit a surgical suite nurse to receive pre-operative and post-operative teaching. After
the surgery has been completed, the patient will recover in the OR recovery room and may be moved to the surgical unit for
additional recovery time before being discharged home.
If required, patients will receive follow-up care from the Extra
Mural Program in their own home or through the outpatients clinic department.
The expanded program is being completed
in partnership with physicians, the OR, the surgical unit, physiotherapy, the Extra Mural Program and the outpatient clinics
department.
