New on DVD — The Day After Tomorrow
by Jennifer Keenan

Ronald Emmerich, the same director who gave us aliens in Independence Day, now brings to the silver screen the most devastating force of all — Mother Nature. The Day After Tomorrow is an edge-of-your-seat blockbuster starring Dennis Quaid, Jake Gyllenhaal and Sela Ward.

In a time when man’s biggest enemy is considered mankind itself, this film shows us cities pounded not by bombs but hail the size of grapefruit; skyscrapers brought down by massive tornadoes not hijacked planes; New York City is not on fire, but rather frozen solid — literally.

Although the special effects may be the star of this movie, there is also enough heart to draw you in. We begin to care for the characters and are moved by how far they will go for the people they love. Just when you think their situation cannot get any worse . . . it does. The film's "heart in your chest" suspense takes the rivalry of man versus nature to a whole other level.

This "disaster" movie illustrates how man lives without thought of consequences. As mankind’s reliance on fossil fuels continues to cause global warming, climate change is and will be a reality. The real question is, will we learn from our mistakes?

Special Features include two commentaries: the first by Director/Co-Writer Roland Emmerich and Producer Mark Gordon, and the second with Co-Writer Jeffrey Nachmanoff, Cinematographer Uelisteiger, Editor David Brenner and Production Designer Barry Chusid.

Along with the usual deleted scenes is a special section entitled Audio Anatomy: Interactive Demo, which allows you to isolate several layers of audio that went into creating a particular scene. There is also a Weblink feature for those who are equipped with a DVD-ROM drive in their computer.

Rated PG Approx. 124 min.

Jennifer Keenan loves the movies. From big Hollywood productions to smaller independent films, she memorises every line of her favourite characters, remembers every detail from her favourite scenes. But the role Jennifer enjoys playing best is being a stay-at-home mom for her three children.
